Sedation/Nitrous Gas Back

There are many options for sedation available for patients who have a difficult time or get anxious during dental procedures. Sometimes the dental procedure can be extremely challenging and might require sedation. It is important that you feel comfortable during your treatment.

We use nitrous gas to calm our patients, which is the most non-invasive type of sedation available. Patients become relaxed so they feel at ease during their treatment. It only requires that you breathe deeply when receiving the gas so it can work quickly.

Nitrous gas takes a few minutes to wear off by having the patient breathe in oxygen. The effects of the gas wear off quickly, so after a few minutes patients are free to resume their daily routine without any assistance. Patients are fully aware during dental procedures, and the amount of gas can be altered to individual comfort levels.

Some other options available are:

  • Oral Sedatives: Can be taken before the procedure so that you are relaxed during the procedure
  • Intravenous Sedation (IV ) : These medications put you in a deep sleep during the procedure and will require a thorough consultation with the dentist about your medical history.
  • Nitrous Oxide: Inhalation is done through the nose and mouth, mainly used to increase pain threshold. Patient is awake but are usually in calmer state, popularly referred to as “Laughing Gas”.
  • General Anesthesia: Being kept in a controlled state of unconsciousness during the procedure. Allows discomfort and movement to be zeroed out allowing us to complete difficult treatments while you are in your sleep.
