Root canal treatment, also known as Endodontic treatment, is the treatment for the inside of a tooth. A root canal treatment is needed when the pulp or nerve of a tooth has died resulting from a deep cavity, injury or infection in the tooth. If left untreated, an abscess (pus) can develop resulting in swelling and pain and can cause permanent damage to the bone supporting the tooth. Some indicators of requiring a root canal could be:
A dentist or Endodontist, who is a dentist that specializes in root canal treatment, may perform the procedure. You will most likely require an X-ray to examine the inside of the tooth. The procedure may take one or more visits depending on how far along the infection has progressed. If you require more than one visit, a temporary filling will be placed on the tooth to protect it until next appointment. In an adult, once the root canal is performed, the tooth will look and function normally. In fact, with the right care at home and regular dental check-ups, the repaired tooth can be long lasting.
