Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, occurs when the upper and lower teeth are grinding or rubbing against each other in a sideways motion. A person may unconsciously clench their teeth when they're awake (awake bruxism) or clench or grind them during sleep (sleep bruxism). This happens unknowingly.

Some signs and symptoms of bruxism:

  • Teeth grinding at night which may be quite loud
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Increased tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Jaw, neck or face pain or soreness
  • Dull headaches
  • Tired or sore jaw muscles or a locked jaw
  • Damage on the inside of the cheek due to chewing
  • Sleep disruption
